Taylor Swift has donated $50,000 to help Ashley Taunton and her family as the Connecticut mother recovers from severe injuries sustained when she was struck by a vehicle after stopping to assist people at a crash scene.
Taylor Swift has made a $50,000 donation to a fundraising campaign supporting a mother of three who was badly injured after stopping to help people involved in a road accident.
Ashley Taunton, a 42-year-old certified nursing assistant from Connecticut, encountered the crash during a severe rainstorm on July 18 while traveling with her daughter.
Taunton stopped after seeing teenagers whose vehicle had hydroplaned. While she was assisting at the scene, another vehicle also lost control on the wet roadway and moved toward the group.
Taunton managed to push one person away from the approaching vehicle before she was struck herself. Her injuries were life-threatening and included a ruptured diaphragm, broken ribs, internal bleeding and other trauma.
She was treated at Rhode Island Hospital and has faced an extended recovery that includes physical rehabilitation. Friends organized online fundraising to reduce financial pressure on Taunton, her husband Joe and their three children during that process.
Swift's $50,000 contribution became the largest individual donation reported to the GoFundMe campaign. The singer also posted a brief message offering support for Taunton's recovery.
The story drew wider attention because Taunton later learned that one of the teenagers she helped was the son of a longtime friend. That connection was discovered after the emergency rather than before she stopped to assist.
The GoFundMe had raised more than $64,000 by Aug. 28, while supporters had also contributed through a Meal Train fundraiser intended to help the family with practical needs.
Taunton has described surviving the incident as an experience that changed how she views life and time with the people close to her.
Swift has a history of making direct financial contributions to people facing medical emergencies and other hardships. In this case, the donation amplified attention to an already growing community effort supporting Taunton's recovery.
